KPD Conducts Traffic Enforcement Detail
The Killeen Police Department initiated a speed STEP (Special Traffic Enforcement Program) detail on Interstate 14, today, Thursday, March 2, 2017, from 8:00am until 1:30pm. Through a grant received from the Texas Department of Transportation to assist the department with overtime, officers were able to conduct this detail. This detail was part of a citywide traffic education and enforcement action and was citizen complaint driven.
In the detail, there was a police officer monitoring the speeds of vehicles with a certified laser and would radio the other police units of the violator. The department had a total of sixteen (16) officers working this detail and could have used even more due to the fact that several violators could not be stopped.
There were a total of 312 speeding violations issued and 21 non-hazardous violations; to include No Driver’s License, No Insurance and Fail to Display Driver License.
The majority of the violations issued were in excess of 10 miles per hour above the posted speed limit and several violations issued were in excess of 20 miles per hour. The fastest violator cited was at 99 miles per hour.
The purpose of special traffic enforcement details is to inform citizens of the actual violation and to create awareness of the actual law.
