Killeen Police Investigate a Pedestrian Fatality on Elms Road

Killeen, TX (July 25, 2022) Investigators with the Traffic Unit are investigating a pedestrian fatality. 

On Friday, July 22, 2022, at approximately 1:39 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1300 BLK of W Elms RD in reference to a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. The preliminary investigation revealed that the pedestrian was standing on the eastbound sidewalk and failed to yield right of way to a motor vehicle that was traveling east in the outside lane when she stepped into the roadway.  The pedestrian was immediately transported to the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in critical condition.

The victim, 24-year-old Eliana Leigh Shoemate, succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at 3:15 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke. 

No injuries were reported by the sole occupant of the vehicle.

There are no pending criminal charges for this crash.

Investigators with the Traffic Unit continue to investigate this fatality and there is no other information at this time.

Killeen Police Accepting Applications for Citizen’s Police Academy

Killeen, TX (July 7, 2022): Killeen Police Department will be hosting its 52nd Citizen’s Police Academy with classes beginning on August 8, 2022.

Classes will be held on Monday evenings from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., starting August 8, 2022 thru October 17, 2022, and one additional class on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 8:30 a.m. This is a free eleven-week course designed to give our community a better understanding of police operations and procedures.

Applications are currently available at the Killeen Police Department Police Headquarters and the deadline submission for applications will be Friday, July 22, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. Applicants must agree to submit to a background check which includes a criminal history inquiry.
