Rabid Skunk in Yowell Ranch Subdivision

Killeen Animal Services confirms reports of rabid skunk in Killeen.

On Monday, March 2, 2015, Killeen Animal Services Officers recovered a skunk in the Yowell Ranch subdivision. On Tuesday, March 3, 2015, the skunk was shipped to the Texas Department of Health Bureau of Laboratories be tested and on Wednesday, March 4, 2015, Killeen Animal Services was notified that the Rabies test had come with a positive result. It is unknown if the skunk had contact with any humans or animals.

The Killeen Animal Services would like to inform the citizens that in the event that you see an animal that appears to be sick or acting peculiar, to please contact the Killeen Police Department at 254-501-8830 to have an Animal Services Officer respond. Please do not attempt to handle the animal as it could be infectious.

Rabies Confirmed in Skunk Found on Greyhound Drive

Killeen Animal Control Officers responded to the 4500 block of Greyhound Drive on Saturday, May 24, 2014, in reference to a dog chasing a skunk out of the yard of a residence. A call was later received advising officers that the skunk was found dead in the backyard of another residence. The skunk was picked up and per protocol it was processed for testing at the Texas Department of State Health Service, Austin Laboratory.

The Texas Department of State Health Services notified the Killeen Animal Control Unit on May 27, 2014 that the skunk had tested positive for the rabies virus.

Animal Control Officers will be distributing handouts in the area of Greyhound to ensure the residents of that area are aware of this incident, the potential danger that has been identified and have a chance to prepare.

We ask that all citizens to take the following precautions:

  • Make sure your pets rabies vaccinations are up to date
  • Supervise your pets and/or children when they are outdoors even in fenced yards
  • Do not approach or touch any wild animal
  • Report any sick or injured animals or any unusual animal activity to the Killeen Animal Control Unit at:

Killeen Police Investigates Dog Attack

Killeen Police investigate a dog attack on several children and one adult.

Officers responded to a 911 call in reference to a dog bite at Cody Poe Rd. and Armadillo Dr. on Monday, April 14, 2014 at 4:00pm. Upon the officers’ arrival, witnesses informed them that they saw three pit bull dogs actively attacking a 12 year female, 11 year old male and a 26 year old female who was trying to help the children get away from the dogs. Officers located the three victims, all of them suffering from multiple puncture wounds, and the aggressive dogs behind 2703 Cody Poe Rd. Officers were forced to use deadly force to stop the attack.

The 12 year female victim was transported to the Scott and White Children’s Hospital in stable condition. The 11 year old male victim and the 26 year old victim were both transported to Metroplex Hospital in stable condition. The names of the victims will not be released at this time.

Killeen Animal Control took custody of the injured dog however the other two pit bulls fled after the shots were fired and they are still at large.

This case continues to be investigated and information will be released as it becomes available.

Killeen Animal Control Reports Skunk Tests Positive for Rabies

Killeen Animal Control Officers responded to the 4500 block of Lonesome Dove on April 6, 2014 in reference to a dog that had been scratched by a skunk. The skunk was captured and per protocol it was processed for testing at the Texas Department of State Health Service, Austin Laboratory.

The Texas Department of State Health Services notified the Killeen Animal Control Unit on April 8, 2014 that the skunk had tested positive for the rabies virus.

Animal Control Officers will be distributing handouts in the area of Lonesome Dove to ensure the residents of that area are aware of this incident, the potential danger that has been identified and have a chance to prepare.

RABIES NOTICE

This notice is to inform the citizens that a rabid skunk was found in the Lonesome Dove area of Killeen in Bell County. All residents should be aware of their surroundings and closely watch for any unusual wild animal activity.   There have been three skunks identified in Bell County between January 2014 and April 3, 2014 and confirmed positive with the rabies virus.

KISD School Donates to Killeen Animal Shelter

Several teachers and students from the Timber Ridge Elementary school have collected a large amount of towels for the Killeen Animal Shelter. This afternoon at 4:00pm, they will be at the shelter, located 3118 Commerce Drive, donating the towels.

Killeen Animal Control Manager Terminated

Killeen Police Department Animal Control Manager, Stacey Sherva, employment terminated on Wednesday, January 29, 2014.

Sherva’s termination stemmed from allegations that she was violating department policy related to the management of personnel and the proper care of animals. On Friday, October 4, 2013, Sherva was placed on administrative leave while an investigation into these allegations was conducted.

“The internal investigation involving the Animal Control Manager, Stacey Sherva, has concluded, and the violations were sustained by my office, said Chief Dennis Baldwin.  The policy violations sustained pertain to Neglect of Duty concerning the substandard management of employees and the lack of care and treatment of animals under the shelter’s care.  Today, Mrs. Sherva’s employment was terminated, and the search for her replacement will begin immediately.”
