Officer Involved Shooting Presented to Bell County Grand Jury

Killeen, TX (May 21, 2021): On May 19, 2021, the Texas Rangers presented the case to the Bell County Grand Jury for review and after deliberation, no prosecution will take place against Officer Reynaldo Contreras.

UPDATE – NEWS RELEASE: KILLEEN POLICE AND TEXAS RANGERS ARE INVESTIGATING AN OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING

Killeen, TX (January 13, 2021): The deceased male has been identified as 52-year-old Patrick Lynn Warren, Sr. of Killeen.

The officer involved, Officer Reynaldo Contreras, is a 5-year veteran of the department. He remains on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.

In addition to the investigation being conducted by the Texas Rangers, the Killeen Police Department is conducting a separate Internal Affairs investigation.

NEWS RELEASE: KILLEEN POLICE AND TEXAS RANGERS ARE INVESTIGATING AN OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING

Killeen, TX (January 10, 2021): At approximately 5:29 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Carrollton Avenue in reference to a 911 call in reference to a psychiatric call. Upon the officer’s arrival, he encountered an emotionally distressed man. The officer initially used his conducted energy weapon, which was ineffective, and then discharged his duty weapon during the encounter, striking the subject. The male was transported by paramedics to the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center and later succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced deceased by medical personnel and Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke.

The Killeen Police Department Criminal Investigation Division and the Texas Rangers responded to the scene and an investigation is ongoing, being led by the Rangers.

As per protocol, the officer will be placed on administrative leave.

Killeen Police Need Your Help Identifying a Suspect

Killeen, TX (May 17, 2021): The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim and a second female were approached by an unknown male, when he fired a weapon at them multiple times. The second female received minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The victim is currently in critical condition.

Detectives with the Violent Crimes Unit obtained video surveillance and captured these two still photos of the suspect. He is described as a black male, last seen wearing a black hoodie with a red shirt or undergarment underneath, black pants, and black and white tennis shoes.

While officers were in route, they were advised that there was a shooting victim. Upon the officers’ arrival, they located a female suffering from a gunshot wound. She was immediately transported to Baylor Scott & White in critical but stable condition.

Shooting in North Killeen

On May 13, 2021, at approximately 10:35am, agents with the United States Marshals Office were serving a federal arrest warrant in the 1900 block of Poage Avenue, when shots were fired. One person is deceased.

The US Marshals Office and the Texas Rangers will be handling the investigation. Any questions can be directed to those agencies.

Investigators continue to process the scene and there is no immediate danger in the area.

Driver from Pedestrian Hit and Run Crash Arrested

Killeen, TX (May 12, 2021): On January 26, 2021, at approximately 3:38 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call in reference to a crash involving a single vehicle and a pedestrian, at the intersection of Chantz Drive and Aspen Drive.  The 12-year-old pedestrian was transported to Seton Medical Center Harker Heights with minor injuries.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the pedestrian was walking in the crosswalk on Aspen Drive, when a black Dodge Challenger traveling westbound on Aspen approached the intersection and failed to yield right of way to the pedestrian, striking him.  The driver of the vehicle fled the scene failing to provide information.

Investigators with the Killeen Police Department’s Traffic Unit worked this case in depth following up on several leads provided by citizens. The driver of the vehicle involved in the hit and run crash was identified.

On May 4, 2021, this case was presented to the Bell County District Attorney’s Office and a complaint was returned charging 23-year-old Kaylon Trevion Copeland with Fail to Stop and Render Aid Causing Bodily Injury.  On May 6, 2021, Copeland was arrested in Detroit, MI is currently in the Wayne County Jail awaiting extradition.

Watercrest Murder Case Presented to Grand Jury

UPDATE –NEWS RELEASE: WATERCREST MURDER CASE PRESENTED TO GRAND JURY

Killeen, TX (May 10, 2021): On May 5, 2021, this case was presented to the Bell County Grand Jury for review and after deliberation, an indictment was returned charging 21-year-old Gregory Ellis with Tampering with or Fabricating Evidence.  No action was taken on the shooting investigation as it was deemed non-criminal.

This will bring the total number of criminal homicides this year to three.

UPDATE –NEWS RELEASE: KILLEEN POLICE IDENTIFY SHOOTER

Killeen, TX (February 24, 2021): The suspect in this incident is currently in the Killeen City Jail. 

Through the investigation, detectives with the Homicide Unit identified the shooter in this incident.  The suspect is awaiting formal charges from the Bell County District Attorney’s Office. 

The investigation is ongoing and at this time no other information will be released.

NEWS RELEASE: KILLEEN POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A MURDER ON WATERCREST

Killeen, TX (February 21, 2021): A 25-year old male victim is dead after being shot near a business in the 4400 block of Watercrest Road. 

Officers with the Killeen Police Department were dispatched on Sunday, February 21, 2021, at approximately 2:13 a.m., to the Crew Hookah Lounge located at 4400 Watercrest Road in reference to a 911 call about a shooting victim.  Upon the officers’ arrival, they located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound.   Officers started to perform life saving measures until paramedics arrived. He was transported to the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in critical condition.    

The victim, Anthony Newton, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 4:03 a.m. by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke.  He ordered an autopsy to be performed at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas. 

No arrests have been made.

This is the second criminal homicide in the City of Killeen of 2021.

The investigation to this Murder is ongoing and at this time no other information will be released.

Killeen Police Identifies Murder Victim

The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Michael Dequan Sanders.

Upon the officers’ arrival, they located a male suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers immediately started to perform life saving measures until paramedics arrived.

The victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke at 4:16 a.m. on scene. He ordered an autopsy to be performed at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.

This the fourth criminal homicide in the City of Killeen of 2021.
