Road Closures for Police Officer Funeral Announced

Due to the funeral services for Detective Dinwiddie Saturday, May 17, 2014, the following roadways will be closed to through traffic:

 

8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.            South WS Young Drive – from Elms Road to Little Nolan

11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.          WS Young Drive – from Elms Road to Azalea Drive

Liberty Street to Atkinson Street

The outside eastbound lane on Rancier Ave – from WS Young to 38th Street

 

These roads will be closed to through traffic; however, people attending the funeral services and residents who live on the closed portions of these streets will have access. We ask the community’s patience, as drivers may need to communicate with an officer directing traffic prior to proceeding.

Funeral Services for Killeen Police Detective Charles Dinwiddie

Funeral Services honoring Detective Charles “Chuck” Dinwiddie will be as follow:

The family will receive visitors on Friday, May 16, 2014 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at the First Baptist Church located at 3310 S. WS Young Drive.

The funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 10:00am at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center located at 3601 S. WS Young Drive; burial will follow at the Killeen City Cemetery.

Donation Accounts Established for Fallen and Wounded Officers

The Killeen Police Department would like to thank everyone for their support during our tragic events. Many have asked for a location to make donations to either Officer Charles Dinwiddie’s family or to Officer Odis Denton and his family.

The Dinwiddie family has asked our department to release the following statement:

“While our family recognizes the risks of law enforcement every day, we have lost a father, husband, brother and son suddenly. Charles was a charismatic, loving member of our family and dedicated to his job with the Killeen police department and Swat team. Charles was a man of many talents and had compassion for everyone whom he met and would not hesitate to offer assistance to any in need. Charles senseless death is tragic and shocking for the community and his brothers and sisters of the Killeen Police Department. As we mourn our loss, the family wishes to do so in private. We direct all media inquires and media interview requests to the Killeen Police Department.”

Officer Dinwiddie’s family understands the community may have questions; they have made a family member available for comment on Thursday, May 15, 2014, at 2:30pm, at the Killeen Police Headquarters’ Community room.

Our department is deeply saddened by the loss of Officer Dinwiddie and the injury of Officer Denton. We ask that you continue to keep these families in your thoughts and prayers.

Killeen Police Identify Fallen Officer

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Detective Charles “Chuck” Dinwiddie.   Dinwiddie was an 18 year veteran of the Killeen Police Department and a member of the SWAT Team for 15 years of those years.

“Our community has suffered a great loss. Few people have touched the number of lives, in such a meaningful way, as Detective Dinwiddie. As a dedicated professional, his service to the Killeen community was with honor, courage, and unwavering loyalty. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time, says Chief Dennis Baldwin.”

On Friday, May 9, 2014, just after 5:30am, members of the Killeen Police Department Tactical Response Unit and the Bell County Organized Crime Unit were attempting to serve a narcotics search warrant. The TRU was beginning to breach the window when the 49 year old male inside, opened fire striking four officers. Two of the officers who were shot, received minor wounds because they were shot in an area where their safety equipment protected them; they were treated and released at Scott & White Memorial Hospital.

Officer Odis Denton, a 9 year veteran of the department and an 8 year SWAT Team member, was shot in the femur. He was transported to the Carl R Darnall Army Hospital and later transferred to Scott & White Memorial Hospital. After undergoing surgery Officer Denton is in the Intensive Care Unit in good condition; he continues to recover successfully. Detective Dinwiddie received a life threatening wound to the face and was immediately transported to the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center and later transferred to Scott & White Memorial Hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition. On Sunday, May 11, 2014, Detective Dinwiddie succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 2:14 pm by Justice of the Peace David Barfield. Detective Dinwiddie’s body will be escorted to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas on Monday, May 12, 2014, for an autopsy to be performed.

Funeral arrangements are pending and will be released as they become available.

The Killeen Police Department would like to thank the members of the Temple and Harker Heights Police Departments and Scott and White Memorial Hospital for providing their phenomenal support to us during this very trying time.

Killeen Police Officers Shot on Circle M Drive

Killeen Police investigate early morning shooting of officers on Circle M Dr.

Members of The Killeen Police Tactical Response Unit and Bell County Organized Crime Unit were attempting to execute a search warrant at 1104 Circle M Dr. # C, at approximately 5:30 am, on Friday, May 9, 2014. As the officers were breaching the apartment the occupants inside opened fire on the officers; four officers were shot. Two of the officers were shot in an area were their safety equipment protected them and they were treated and released from Scott and White Memorial Hospital. Two other officers were transported to the Carl R Darnall Army Medical Center and subsequently transferred to the Scott and White Memorial Hospital. One of the officers is a nine year veteran currently in the Intensive Care Unit at Scott and White and is in good condition. The other officer is an 18 year veteran, in the Intensive Care Unit at Scott and White Memorial Hospital; he is currently listed in critical condition.

A 49 year old male and 50 year old female were taken into custody and transported to the Killeen city jail.

This case was reviewed by the Bell County District Attorney’s Office and complaints were returned charging Marvin Louis Guy with three counts of Attempted Capital Murder, his bond was set at $1,000,000 for each count.

The investigation continues involving the female and her name will not be released at this time.

The names of the officers will not be released at this time.

This case continues to be investigated and more information will be provided as it becomes available

Mayor Dan Corbin said “On behalf of the 134,000 residents of Killeen and on behalf of the Council, I offer condolences to the families of those officers who were shot, and pledge the full support of the community.”

City Manager Glenn Morrison said “We are deeply saddened by today’s events and hold our officers and their families in our prayers. The City of Killeen will remain united and strong in this difficult time. We pledge our unwavering support to our brave officers and their loved ones in the times ahead.”

Chief Baldwin said “The tragic events that unfolded have left the members of the Killeen Police Department and their families seeking answers to a senseless, destructive act.   The families of the injured officers are aware of the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from the Central Texas Community.  On behalf of the Killeen Police Department and the families of the injured officers, I would like to express our appreciation.”

Trek Across Texas Bike Ride

The Killeen Police Department would like to cordially invite you to their headquarters for the “We Remember” Memorial Bicycle Trek Across Texas, on Friday, April 25, 2014, at 8am.

Police Officers with the San Antonio Police Department will be riding bicycles throughout the state of Texas visiting every city of fallen officers and holding a small remembrance ceremony to honor these brave men and women along with their families. A memorial flag will be presented to the family and a plaque will be given to the department.

Killeen Police Department units will escort the officers on their bicycles from the LaQuinta Inn located at 1108 S. Fort Hood St. to the Killeen Police Department Headquarters located at 3304 Community Blvd. Local officers, who will be riding in the Police Unity Tour to Honor Fallen Officers in May, will be joining this Trek Across Texas in Killeen and Belton.   The escort is scheduled to begin at 7:45am and is expected to take approximately 30 minutes to get to the headquarters.

The officers will leave the Killeen Police Department immediately after the ceremony and ride to the Bell County Justice Complex located on Loop 121 in Belton, to Honor fallen Bell County Deputy Adam Davis. They will be joined by the local Police Unity Tour members from the Killeen Police Department, Harker Heights Police Department and Officer Hornsby’s widow Kimberly.

Everyone is invited to attend, if you run, cycle or ride a motorcycle you can help carry the memorial flag that bears the name of our honored fallen Officer Bobby Hornsby and Bell County Deputy Adam Davis.
