KPD Involved in Standoff on Lake Road
Officers responded to a 911 call in reference to a domestic dispute in the 4400 block of Lake Road at 5:16pm. As officers were responding they were notified that shots had been fired from the same location as the domestic dispute. The officers arrived and were attempting to speak with the people involved in the dispute when officers heard a shot fired. The officers were able to make contact with the female who advised she was no longer inside the apartment with the male who was armed; she advised he was inside 4402 Lake Rd # 6 alone. The officers then attempted to speak with the male as they took cover and more shots were fired from a window on the 2nd floor.
The Tactical Response Unit was deployed and arrived to assist with this incident. Over the next several hours the Crisis Negotiators spoke off and on with the 21 year old male and attempted to get him to surrender. Another shot was heard inside the apartment; members of the tactical response unit, without compromising their safety, were able to get to the window and clear the apartment. They located the 21 year old male deceased of what appears to be a self inflicted gunshot wound. Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin pronounced him deceased at 9:59pm and ordered an autopsy to be performed at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.
This continues to be investigated by the Criminal Investigation Division and information will be released as it becomes available.
During this standoff Lake Road was closed between Hooten and Sunset Drive and residents were asked to stay inside their residences until this was resolved. The Killeen Police Department appreciates everyone’s patience and apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused.
