Travis Lee Leighton

The Killeen Police Department Tactical Response Unit was deployed to the residence at 11:20am. The team attempted to negotiate with the male for several hours, advising him to surrender, however he continued to ignore their commands.  Chemical munitions were eventually deployed into the residence and there was still no contact with the suspect.  Officers had reason to believe the suspect was still inside the residence and at approximately 5:30pm, the officers began negotiations with the suspect who was hiding under the house.  More chemical munitions were deployed, which encouraged the suspect to surrender; he was taken into custody without incident at 6:31 pm.

Travis Lee Leighton, a 27 year old male, was taken into custody for numerous outstanding warrants to include a Felony warrant for Parole Violation stemming from a prior drug related conviction.

The 28 year old female who was detained was then arrested and charged with Hindering Apprehension. Her name has been withheld pending the return of formal charges by the Bell County District Attorney’s Office on Thursday, September 18, 2014.

This case continues to be investigated and information will be released as it becomes available.

Governor Perry Honors Bell County Officers

Governor Rick Perry honored 32 police officers, firefighters and medical personnel, who were killed or seriously injured in the line of duty at the Capitol in Austin today, awarding each officer with the Star of Texas Award.

Six of those first responders awarded, were in Bell County.  Killeen Police Officer Robert “Bobby” Hornsby, Killeen Detective Charles “Chuck” Dinwiddie and Bell County Deputy Adam Davis, who were killed in the line of duty, were honored posthumously.  Killeen Police Officers Juan Obregon and Odis Denton and Temple Police Sergeant James Bennett, who were seriously injured in the line of duty, also received the Star of Texas Award.

“For a decade now, we set aside time every year to honor some of our state’s best and bravest,” Governor Perry said.  “These individuals placed their lives on the line to fight back raging fires, rush badly-injured Texans to the hospital for life-saving care, or take the most dangerous felons off the streets.  They’re heroes because they understand the risks involved in their jobs and they know there’s nothing routine about any fire or any traffic stop.”

This year marks the 11th anniversary of the legislation creating the Star of Texas Award, which was established to honor and commemorate the bravery and selflessness of Texas’ first responders.
