KPD Taking Applications for next Citizen’s Police Academy
The Killeen Police Department will be hosting its 38th Citizen’s Police Academy with classes beginning on March 2nd, 2015 and continuing through May 18th, 2015.
Classes will be held on Monday evenings from 7:00pm until 10:00pm and one additional class on Saturday, April 18th. There will be a total of twelve weeks of instruction, including presentations of the functions and operations of the departments various investigative and administrative divisions. It is an educational and informative program that allows citizens the opportunity to learn about the issues that effect law enforcement efforts in the City of Killeen.
Applications will be available at the Killeen Police Department beginning Monday, January 5, 2015; the deadline for applications will be Friday, February 20, 2015, at 5:00pm. Applicants must agree to submit to a background check which includes a criminal history inquiry. There is no cost to anyone who enrolls.

KPD Investigates Crash on Twin Creek Drive
Killeen Police investigate an early afternoon crash on Twin Creek Dr. today.
Officers responded to the 100 block of S. Twin Creek Dr. at 11:56am, on Tuesday, January 06, 2015, after receiving a 911 call. Upon the officer’s arrival they located the lone occupant of a red Nissan 370Z on the ground outside the vehicle and two injured female occupants of a red Chevy Silverado pickup. Witnesses told officers the Nissan was traveling southbound on Twin Creek near the tracks in the inside lane at a high rate of speed. The driver was unable to negotiate the curve and crossed into oncoming traffic colliding with the Chevy Silverado that was northbound in the inside lane. The front of the Nissan to include the engine and front tires came off of the vehicle and landed approximately 150 feet away in the field area.
All three occupants were transported by ambulance to the Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple. Their names have been withheld at this time.
This crash continues to be investigated and information will be released as it becomes available.

KPD Arrests Robbery Suspects
Killeen Police arrest two men after they rob a local convenience store.

Officers responded to a 911 call on Thursday, January 1, 2015 at 7:10pm, after being told the Seven Days Convenience Store located at 1408 E. Rancier had just been robbed. As officers were in route to the area they were told that a black male with a tattoo near his left eye, wearing a blue hooded jacket and a red, white and blue bandana across his face, entered the store and demanded money from the attendants. A weapon was not displayed however the suspect made reference to having one. The suspect then fled the store with an undisclosed amount of money and entered a dark colored Land Rover with a partial license plate bearing CJT5, driven by a white male adult wearing a green sweatshirt. Officers searched the immediate area but were unable to locate the vehicle at that time. An officer who was patrolling his area shortly after the robbery, drove past a Shell gas station in the 1100 block of South Fort Hood St. and saw a dark colored Land Rover at the gas pumps, he then saw a white male wearing a green sweatshirt walking around the back of the vehicle. As the vehicle was leaving the gas station, officers stopped the vehicle with two occupants matching the description of the suspects from the recent robbery in the 1300 block of South Fort Hood St.
The two male occupants were identified as those who were involved in the robbery of the Seven Days Convenience Store and taken into custody. As officers were inventorying the vehicle they also found evidence from the same robbery.
This case was reviewed by the Bell County District Attorney’s Office and a complaint was returned charging 26 year old Jeffery Jamal Smien Jr. and 30 year old Kourtney Obrian Scott with Robbery. They are currently in the Killeen City Jail awaiting arraignment on January 3, 2015.

KPD Seeks Assistance Identifying this Suspect for Vandalism
Killeen Police need the citizens’ help by identifying a suspect who vandalized property at the Central Texas Veterans Cemetery.
Detectives received information that a white male entered the cemetery located at 11463 US HWY 190, between 5:30pm on Friday, October 31, 2014 and 8:30am on Saturday, November 1, 2014. The suspect smashed the screen to the kiosk used to locate headstones and the glass doors on a bulletin board, using a T-post.
The suspect is described as a white male wearing a dark blue cap with an unknown design, a gray shirt with dark horizontal stripes and a black collar, khaki shorts and black shoes.

Killeen Police are investigating two robberies that occurred Wednesday, December 17, 2014 just before 9:30am.
Officers responded to the Family Dollar Store located at 1005 Bacon Ranch Road, at 8:18am after receiving a 911 call in reference to the store being robbed. Upon the officer’s arrival, they were told a black male walked into the store, made mention of a weapon and demanded money. The suspect took an undisclosed amount of money and fled the area.
At approximately 9:20am, we received a second 911 call in reference to a robbery at the Jack in the Box located at 1100 E. Central Texas Expressway. Witnesses told the officers a black male walked into the restaurant and demanded money. The suspect’s method of operation was similar to the robbery at the Family Dollar.
The suspect was described as a black male, about 5′ 10″ tall, weighing about 160-180 pounds wearing a black hoodie, blue jeans and dark colored tennis shoes with white trim. It was possible the suspect fled in a Silver Ford Taurus.

KPD Investigates a Fatal Crash
Killeen Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred during the evening hours on Wednesday, December 17, 2014.
Officers responded to a 911 call at 7:00 pm, advising a crash had occurred involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at 200 W. Veterans Memorial Boulevard. Upon the officers arrival, they were told that a white male was walking south across the lanes of traffic with a female, pushing a wheelchair, when a black Dodge Ram Pickup, driven by a 26 year old male, traveling eastbound in the inside lane, collided with the male. The 55 year old male victim, Cameron Bruce Gravitt, was transported to the Carl R. Darnall Army Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries; he was pronounced deceased by medical authorities at 7:42pm.
The Killeen Police Department Traffic Unit continues to investigate this crash and information will be released as it becomes available.

KPD Investigates a Death Investigation near Creekside Drive
The Killeen Police Department is conducting a death investigation of a body that was found in Nolan Creek.
Officers responded to the 4500 block of Creekside Drive after a 911 call was received at 1:40pm, today, December 16, 2014 telling them a deceased body was seen near the creek. Upon the officer’s arrival, they searched the area and located a body hanging from a tree. Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced the person deceased at 2:15pm and ordered an autopsy to be performed at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.
At this time, the identity of the deceased person is unknown.

KPD Investigates a credit union Robbery
Killeen Police are investigating a late afternoon credit union Robbery.
Killeen Police received a call today, December 12, 2014, at 3:13pm in reference to a Robbery at the Texell Federal Credit Union located at 2208 Sunny Lane. Upon the officer’s arrival, witnesses told them that a male walked into the credit union and gave a note to the teller demanding money; he referred to having a weapon however the teller didn’t see one. The teller complied with the demand and the suspect fled southbound on foot, jumping a residential privacy fence. The suspect is described as a light skinned black male, 6’ tall, 150 pounds, wearing a black beanie, a black hooded sweatshirt with a gray t-shirt and a green neon vest over it and blue jeans.

KPD Investigates Toddler Shooting
Killeen Police investigate a shooting on Kern Drive involving a two year old child.
Officers responded to 807 Kern Rd. at 8:43am on Friday, December 05, 2014, after receiving a call from a mother who advised her toddler son had accidentally shot himself. Officers arrived to find the toddler suffering from a gunshot wound to his left thigh and chest area. Killeen Fire Department Paramedics arrived and immediately transported the child to the McLane Children’s Scott & White Hospital in Temple in serious condition. The mother told officers she was in the bathroom when she heard a loud bang; she went to the child’s bedroom to find him suffering from a gunshot wound. As officers were conducting the initial investigation they removed several other weapons from the residence.
The two year old victim underwent surgery to remove the bullet and is in the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition. The victim, his 1 year old and 7 year old sisters have been removed from the family and placed in custody of the Child Protective Services at this time.
Detectives continue to investigate this case and more information will be released as it becomes available.
The Killeen Police Department encourages everyone to be responsible when children and weapons are in a residence. Children are very curious and can gain access to places you wouldn’t think are possible. Keep your weapons locked and out of reach at all times.
